+ Should I be booking a test shoot or a production?
Test shoots are shorter, with a maximum of up to 4 hours, with few people involved and typically minimal prep and production. Test shoots are an afforable option for photographers that are portfolio-building or shooting simple client sessions, such as portraits, boudoir sessions, or basic product photos.
Productions allow you to book longer sessions further in advance, and have no crew size limitations. If you are planning a shoot that has more than 8 people involved, and you need more than 4 hours for your shoot, you would be required to book your session as a production.
+ Is insurance required? What are your policies?
Insurance is not required for normal hourly rentals, however, is still highly recommended. Renters are liable for any damages or fees incurred, and we do require having a card on file for liability purposes - not unlike a hotel. By reserving your appointment, you acknowledge that you've read and agree to our day rental policies. We may require insurance for certain productions or events on a case-by-case basis.
+ Can we host an event?
The studio is able to accomodate small events and intimate gatherings by request. Please note that the online booking feature is ONLY for scheduling photo shoots and video shoots. Please contact us directly if you want to discuss hosting an event at Studio Apparatus!
+ What amenities are included?
Your reservation includes access to all the furniture and props we have available. Access to tools, such as our ladders, clothes racks, hangers, mirrors, fans, and garment steamer are included. You will also have access to basic grip equipment such as C-stands with pole arms, light stands, freestanding reflectors, extension cords and clips. As an added bonus, we have free wi-fi, filtered water, tea and coffee.
Certain amenities may be reserved for an additional fee, such as lighting equipment, modifiers, gels, backdrops or fog machines. Access to the boudoir is an additional fee.
The studio is very well equipped for a large variety of productions, so we are likely to have everything you may ever need!
+ Can we bring large props or our own furniture?
As long as it doesn't violate any of our policies, you can bring in just about anything you want if it can fit through the doors! We have a loading dock and a 7'x9' freight elevator to get to our floor.
+ We are planning a messy shoot - what's the policy on that?
As long as it is well-contained, getting a little bit messy is usually not an issue. We recommend purchasing plastic drop cloths that can be laid out around the shooting area to help keep the mess contained.
We generally prohibit shoots involving substances that are difficult to clean or remove, such as paint. Glitter is strictly prohibited.
The studio must be put back into the same condition it was before your rental session. Anything that is not adequately cleaned up is subject to a cleaning fee at the end of the shoot.
+ Seriously no glitter? Are you joking?
No joke. It's nearly impossible to clean and this isn't Klub Kesha.
More importantly, microplastics are horrible for the environment. It poisons our water. Glitter kills whales. Think about the whales.
+ What about pets?
We love animals! All critters are welcome as long as they are well-behaved and looked after.
+ What is the total capacity of the space?
To keep traffic & production time to a minimum, test shoots have a maximum capacity of 8 people, including crew, models & guests.
Production rentals generally do not have a cap limit, however, due to the size of the space, we recommend keeping productions under 25 people. We do reserve the right to charge additional fees for high volume sessions due to increased traffic and wear on our facilities.
+ Is the building quiet enough for audio recording?
The building itself is very well insulated against outdoor sound, with practically no room noise whatsoever. However, please let us know if you intend to record audio so we can ensure that our neighbors are notified ahead of time and possible interruptions can be avoided.
+ What do we do if we're running late, need more time or need to reschedule?
Your appointment time begins at the time that you reserve online. Please let us know if you happen to run late and if there's anything we can do to help get things rolling right away. If there are no appointments immediately following your reservation, you may extend your reservation for an additional fee.
